Kathryn Durden Profile
At the age of 14, Kathryn started working before and after school for Tony Self, a local trainer in Adelaide where her family were based at the time. Just after finishing school she gained a position with legendary South Australian based trainer Colin Hayes. A great relationship blossomed and in a short time Kathryn was a close part of the Hayes team.
A broad knowledge of horsemanship was gained which included breeding, weaning foals, preparing yearlings for sales, attending sales, breaking in and training methods. It wasn't long before Kathryn was the travelling foreman for the Hayes family responsible for the 'Carnival' horses in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Darwin.
An overseas opportunity beckoned, Kathryn grabbed it with both hands and set off to work in the UK for Ray Hutchinson at Newmarket. She then travelled to America working in Miami, Lexington, Churchill Downs in Kentucky and in Minnesota for Kentucky Derby winning trainer Carl Nafzger which lasted for 12months. During this time she learnt many different ways to train horses, different methods used to treat injuries and maintain soundness in horses.
After arriving back in Australia Kathryn took out her own training licence in 1999 and her team started to grow. It wasn't long before the winners started to flow with some of her proudest achievements being TAHBOB (Galleywood Hurdle), LOCH TORRIDON ( 4 wins, Caulfield winner & 2nd in Warrnambool Cup), KYLEAKIN( 7 wins inc. Casterton Cup & city winner), SIR WALTER (5 wins, 3 in a row, 2nd Colac Cup and city winner), CHARTED ( Moonee Valley stayers final Winner, 2nd in Australian Hurdle) and more recently COLL AND TIREE (4 wins, 3 wins in a row) WELLS a promising stayer (4 wins from 10 starts, 3 out of his last 4 starts, 3 on the flat and 1 hurdle) and MOULIN BLEU (Sheep Hills Cup, city winner of 6 races).
Kathryn and her husband Craig work together with a small dedicated team. Craig who retired in 2010 was a champion jumps jockey winning the coveted Tommy Corrigan Award seven times. Both Kathryn and Craig ride trackwork which gives them an intimate knowledge of how the horses are feeling and working. They often use a lead pony to help educate the babies and give the older horses some exercise without any weight on their back.
Each horse is treated as an individual and being a small stable they can change things around to suit each horse. She enjoys taking on tried horses that other trainers may be struggling with and giving them a new opportunity to shine under her care.
Kathryn is very passionate about training her horses and loves what she does. She encourages you to give her a call if you have a horse looking for a change of environment or a young horse looking to be educated and put through its paces.
